Power

For whatever reason, power surges and fluctuations happen very frequently in this area.  Our Raleigh IT support staff recommends that at very least you have a surge suppressor, but we would prefer to see a Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) being used if at all possible.  You only need a 200W/350VA output capacity, and it should run anywhere from $35.00 to $50.00, depending on sales, brand, etc.

There is really nothing you can do about a preventing a direct lightning strike from damaging your computers, so our Raleigh IT support staff recommends that you need to prepare by backing up your data using some sort of removable media (preferably non-powered) or off-site.

Hurricanes and Tornados

Fortunately, hurricanes and tornados don’t happen to often, but they do happen.  Flooding is a concern during hurricanes, so our Raleigh IT support staff recommends that you prepare for the hurricane by elevating all of your computer equipment at least 4 feet or more, depending on the flooding capacity of your area.  Regarding a tornado, you need to make sure you have that good offsite backup!
